SQUAWK 'n' RIOT is the recreation of headphones from the perspective of the late Alexander McQueen. Focusing on his primitivism era, the headphones amplify the sound of industrialism and society--metal clashing against plastic. The bird, a representation of Isabella Blow, controls the chains as well as the veiled user, illustrating how humanity has no control over what it is influenced by. The contrast of lace and leather, feathers and fabric in addition to the high-contrast achromatic color scheme are references to McQueen's work at the time.
Inspired by my Aztecan roots and prompt to create masks from scratch, I wanted to create physical embodiments of the Aztec sacrificial calendar from leather to elicit comfort in ones own skin and discomfort in taking on a former persona.
The masks are made from vegetable-tanned leather hide that has been soaked in water and hand molded to match the head size of each model. Further decoration was done based on the sacrifice of the month.
